Snapdragon or Mediatek, Which Processor is better?

Without a doubt, one of the most difficult smartphone topics are their processors. To begin with, it’s simply erroneous to term them “processors” since they are much more than that. That’s why the generally used moniker by manufacturers is SoC (system on a chip) since it defines their function more clearly.

MediaTek

MediaTek is a maker of inexpensive but powerful Helio chipsets. MediaTek CPUs may be found mostly in Sony smartphones and relatively inferior handsets from Chinese manufacturers.

MediaTek’s key advantage over Qualcomm and Exynos is the pricing that may be up to two times cheaper for about the same performance. However, user experiences are not so nice. The major issue for MediaTek’s CPUs is the extraordinarily quick warming and reach of high temperatures (Snapdragon 810 had the similar problem) (Snapdragon 810 had the same problem). Among the newest versions are Helio X10, P10 and X20. Benchmark testing reveals that the X20 is rated alongside Snapdragon 820 and Exynos 8890, but nevertheless, it doesn’t make its way to the luxury smartphone class

One of the few better smartphones with P10 is the Sony Xperia XA, whereas the X20 is present in devices not so popular such as Elephant, Zopo, or Doogee. MediaTek Inc Helio X23 and Helio X27 are two new chipsets, launched in December 2016.

Helio X23 and Helio X27 keep the MiraVision EnergySmart Screen technology that purportedly decreases up to 25 percent battery usage. They have the same GPU as Helio X20 ARM Mali T880 MP4. By buying a device with MediaTek CPU, one restrict oneself (in most circumstances) to a smartphone in a lower middle class or some start-up model.

Characteristics of MediaTek:

  • Not too affordable chipset – Big battery consumer.
  • Greater heating rate owing to a lot of CPU cores.
  • A tiny, graphic chip that is not developed by MediaTek is embedded into this chipset.
  • Process power is paramount.

Snapdragon

Qualcomm CPUs are well known for their Snapdragon series. They are now the greatest on the market owing to the Snapdragon 820. This premium variant may be found in some of the top smartphones of today. The greatest Chinese mobile phones – Xiaomi Mi 5, OnePlus 3 LG G5 Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge (Chinese and American market) and HTC 10. The fact that Samsung has moved away from its Exynos processor is enough to speak about the quality of the Snapdragon 820. Qualcomm presently dominates 65 percent of the 4G LTE market, and is especially strong in China, where the 5 top manufacturers utilize solely their processors (Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, TCL, Lenovo) (Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, TCL, Lenovo)

The primary benefits of Snapdragon 820 in contrast to previous versions stand out in speed, low energy consumption, 40 percent boost in graphics. Graphic capabilities are the fifth generation Adreno GPU (Adreno 530). (Adreno 530). In addition to the 800 series, the Snapdragons 600 series are also of good quality that can be found in mid-range smartphones, such as the Huawei P8 Lite, OPPO R5, HTC Desire 820, and similar.

Considering the advanced technology, the arrival of increasingly demanding content like VR or 4K, a smartphone with a processor below the 600 series is not recommended. Exceptions may be devices like Samsung J5 2016.

Characteristics of Snapdragon:

  • The most secure chipset – very low usage of the battery
  • Less heat compared to Intel or MediaTek.
  • Adreno, a graphics plug created by Qualcomm, is always part of this chipset.
  • Benchmark tests typically demonstrate that the performance of the Snapdragon processor is greater than the others.

Difference Between MediaTek and Snapdragon

Origin of MediaTek and Snapdragon

MediaTek is a multinational semiconductor business formed in 1997 with headquarters in Hsinchu‎, Taiwan. Snapdragon are processors developed by Qualcomm, which is also a multinational semiconductor and IT equipment making corporation, with headquarters in San Diego, California, U.S. It was created in 1985.

Processor cores in MediaTek and Snapdragon

Both MediaTek and Snapdragon are multicore CPUs (1-2-4-6-8-10). (1-2-4-6-8-10). MediaTek commenced pilot manufacture of a 12 core chipset. However, we should bear in mind that it’s less significant how many cores the processor includes, and more what cores are performing.

CPU and GPU in MediaTek and Snapdragon

Comparing MediaTek and Qualcomm strictly from the aspect of performance, there is practically no difference in terms of CPU, but it’s evident that the graphics component is better done by the Adreno GPU featured in all Snapdragon SoCs. This is particularly obvious in the high end category. The gap in GPU performance is substantially less obvious in the mid-range and low-end categories. Qualcomm creates its graphics chips that are ideally suited to operate with the CPU and other components.

Battery life of MediaTek and Snapdragon

MediaTek chipsets are considered to be high power-consuming which results in decreased battery life. They are developing their CPUs to be more energy efficient but are still behind Snapdragon.

Performance

Performance-wise MediaTek’s CPUs are strong functioning. Their additional core processors allow demanding and heavy job executing and they are highly adept at multi-tasking. Snapdragon boasts even superior performance in multi-tasking, managing demanding and strenuous jobs and gaming.

Heating

Snapdragon CPUs are often less prone to heating compared to MediaTek.

Cost of MediaTek and Snapdragon

MediaTek SOCs are generally cheaper than equivalent Qualcomm alternatives.
